How to Effectively Protest

So you’re organizing a protest, but you don’t know where to start? Regardless of the purpose, we believe in grass roots organizing, and we’d like to help to organize your best protest yet!

Here are a few tips:

First, you want to grab people’s attention. How do we do this? Well, you want to make signs that are going to grab people’s attention. You can do this through large, colorful signs, or catchy sayings. Additionally, you can’t have splinters on the wood, because, hey, that’s just uncomfortable. The more uncomfortable people are the sooner they are willing to drop out of the protest, and the more people drop out, the less effective your protest is.

You also can’t be scared to recruit a lot of people. People are going to think you’re weird or annoying, but you can’t let that scare you off. You have to be able to grab their attention and try to get them to come to your event.

You’re going to want to have a cause that many people believe in. We all may have interesting views, but they each have a time and a place. Try to use them in appropriate places to maximize their effectiveness.

You have to be in a good position. You have to stick together and make sure you have a good, full team of people. If not, you’ll be divided and you won’t accomplish anything. Additionally, you’re going to want to have a good catchy chant that people will remember.

Try to be selective with the people you recruit. You don’t want to recruit a bunch of crazy people that will negatively represent your organization or cause. You want to fill your organization with good, well-rounded, helpful people that will positively represent your cause or organization.

If it’s a long protest, you want to be prepared for that. You are the organizer; you want to make sure you have enough water and snacks for everybody. Additionally, even if it’s not meant to be a long protest, you still want to be prepared to stay as long as it takes.

Megaphones are a must. Megaphones really are the quintessential tools for a good protest. Your voice needs to be heard, and with all the craziness going on, you’ll need to make sure people can hear why you’re there.

Make sure you stay organized. If it turns out to be a long protest, you want to make sure you keep your composure. In the past we would buy about 50 small watches (cheap watches under $200)for everybody to use so we were all on the same page. Additionally, communicate as much as you possibly can. Keep a schedule, make sure everybody has read it and plans to follow it closely.

We wish you the best of luck in your event. We don’t care what the protest is, we are just excited that you choose to get out there and make your voice heard. That is one of the great things about this country.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to leave us a comment.

Should People be Allowed to Carry Concealed Weapons? – Gun Politics in America

The use of firearms in America has grown to become a hot button topic due to the rash of recent shootings that has plagued the country.

Concealed carry is the act of carrying a weapon such as a handgun in public. In order for a non-law enforcement officials to legally carry a handgun in a concealed manner, they must possess a CCW permit. Some jurisdictions do restrict or ban CCW permits but they can be obtained through certain provisions in all 50 states except the District of Columbia otherwise known as Washington D.C.

The ability for citizens to walk around in public with concealed weapons has become a debatable topic. Incidents such as the 2012 Shooting of Trayvon Martin that left a 17-year old African American high school student dead has brought more attention to whether ordinary citizens should be allowed to carry concealed firearms.

Pros of Concealed Carry

Firstly, establishing gun laws that eliminate concealed carry can violate the 2nd amendment. Keeping concealed carry legal means Americans are protecting the 2nd amendment and maintaining their most basic rights. Organizations such as the National Rifle Association (NRA) help protect the 2nd amendment. The NRA also promotes firearm safety, self defense, police training, and hunting. I believe there should also be a nonprofit organization like the NRA for air guns. Carrying a concealed air gun is not illegal and in fact I like to occasionally carry my best pellet gun when I go outdoors.

Additionally, the presence of a firearm and an increased number of armed civilians can convince a criminal to retreat. Most criminals do not expect victims to fight back so if more law-abiding citizens are able to defend themselves, then we could see a reduction in the number of crimes.

Lastly, having the ability to carry a weapon with you increases your personal sense of safety and allows law abiding citizens to enjoy the outdoors without the fear of them or their loved ones being victimized.

Cons of Concealed Carry

One of the cons of prohibiting concealed carry is that it can leave law-abiding citizens at risk and more susceptible to becoming victimized by violent criminals. . On the flip side, one of the main problems with having a large number of people carrying around handguns is that simple altercations that can occur at common places such as clubs or parties to escalate to the extreme. In fact, in Canada where concealed carry is illegal, there were only 554 homicides in 2012 whereas that number was 14,173 for the United States.

Another major concern for allowing citizens to carry around concealed firearms is the likelihood of mass shootings that have almost become a common occurrence nowadays. For example shootings such as Sandy Hook, Washington Navy, Aurora Movie Theater, and the Wisconsin Sikh temple are all paradigms of mass shootings in which concealed carry played a role.

In fact it can be argued that deadly weapons are not needed to protect your safety when in public. Less than lethal weapons such as a can of the strongest pepper spray can effectively allow civilians to defend themselves.

In conclusion, concealed carry and the use of firearms by ordinary citizens continue to be a grass-root issue within the United States. It is also evident that new changes to gun laws will continue to be lobbied in congress until both sides can agree on an outcome.

How The Grassroots Movement Takes Hold in America

campaignPolitics is something that every American citizen has to be involved with because every citizen has the unalienable right to vote. However, in order to be successful at politics, political parties and politicians have to have a game plan that will help them get in both the hearts and minds of American citizens whether it’s Finish Line Wheels, a shop selling original car wheels and things, or that CEO that devotes all of their time to their business. In order to be successful in the world of politics, politicians and people who work for a particular candidate need to know and understand what the grassroots movement is, how it works, and how to use it to their advantage.

An Explanation of Grassroots Movements and Ways To Do It

The best way to understand what grassroots is would be to take a look at the word itself. The word “roots” should be the proverbial red flag because that is what it is because it is basically going back to the roots of politics. Grassroots refers to every person being involved in politics whether it is a mechanic dealing with factory rims or a beautician that owns her own shop, but does vote, and then these are the people that will be involved because they truly have no political ties. Here are the ways that ordinary citizens can get involved in the grassroots movement:

  • Grassroots takes inspiration: One of the best ways to get people involved in the grassroots movement is to inspire them. People need to be reminded all about their duty as American citizens, and patriotism is a big way to get people fired up. America is the land of the free, and the home of the brave, and reminding them of that can really have some great results. Patriotism can move mountains when it comes to politics, and it is the best way to get people in the mood to really do some good political work.
  • People are resources for the campaign: Typically, when people talk about resources in a political campaign, they are talking about the money that it takes to do things like buy air time for commercials, print flyers, or book a hall where a rally can be held. However, with the grassroots movement, what people need to realize is that the biggest resources are living human flesh not dollar bills. Money can come and go, but the devotion of people that work hard for the campaign is priceless.
  • Encouragement will get results: One of the biggest things that the grassroots movement can do is to encourage people to not wait until they are told to do something, but to take up the cause and run with it. People have to be trusted to do what they feel is best, and usually, those people can come up with great ideas on their own that get a lot of results. People need to be trusted, and the grassroots movement has been successful because people are left to their own devices and do well because of it.

The Grassroots Movement Is Important For Every Political Campaign

When it comes to politics, the words grassroots movement is always a frequently heard phrase, but people do not seem to understand it. All the grassroots movement is and means is that people from all walks of life come together and help someone they back strongly to get elected. The biggest resources of this movement is people who are dedicated to the cause, and that dedication will mean that they will do anything and everything to get someone elected, and a candidate cannot ask for a more dedicated group of people.

Steal from the poor and give to the rich

We have all heard of the philosophy of Robin Hood to steal from the rich and give to the poor, or in other words to help the common man.

My problem is now that this is nothing more than a mere fairy tale as there is now no such thing as people who want to help the poor or working class, no matter what the government and other companies try to get you to believe.

A true example of this is banks, this is based purely on the fact that they offer you loans and mortgages. At the time this seems like they are trying to help you out by giving you the funds you need to try to move forward with your life, be it by being able to buy a home, car or even just to live a little bit more comfortably for a while.

In this article I want to focus on the idea of raising mortgages and loans, in order to explain to you how the common man always loses out when going down this round, no matter how great things look on paper at the time.

The dangers of the property ladder

I know that we have all been there before, when there is something you desire that you just can’t afford at the time, and for most of us this is that new home, so a mortgage sounds to be the best solution. At this point I must admit that I don’t disagree with the idea of mortgages as they are great when you take away the small print, and for many they are the only way to get on the property ladder.

That being said if you saved the amount you are paying each month for the duration you have the mortgage you could probably buy two homes in the long run. I understand this is not practical, and like everything if you can pay it back there will be no problem or issues.

Although what happens when you can’t pay it back, and when I ask most people this question there is only a small percentage that knows the full extent of what can happen, and the hard truth of the matter is, if you can’t pay they can reserve the right to repossess your home. Property repossessions on are the rise. In america they have been steady for many years but in other areas of Europe and in the UK, repossessed houses for sale are stealing the headlines and even make an investment strategy for many.

When I initially heard this for myself I wanted to look into how many times this actually happens, and to be perfectly honest I was shocked, as this happens every day to honest working class people who genuinely have a couple of bad months and really can’t help it.

The statistics are staggering and it’s not something that can be ignored. If your struggling, seek help, but don’t just rely on the government to bail you out, because the politics is around protecting the banks not the little people. d because I now knew the risks I felt it was my duty to educate all of you, and here we are.

So this concludes this article, and hopefully I have been able to open your eyes to the risks of taking out loans and mortgages that you are not 100% sure you can afford.

Discussing Same Sex Rights In Small Town America

Although the nation as a whole is changing in its views of homosexuality, there are still pockets where homophobia and intolerance run rampant. It is the job of several grass roots organizations to help spread a message of tolerance and respect, and educate people on the fact that everyone deserves equality in the United States.

Just recently the Arizona State Legislature tried to pass a bill that would allow local businesses the right to refuse service to people if those persons violated the business owner’s “religious beliefs.” Basically the bill would have promoted bigotry and intolerance, allowing business owners to legally discriminate against citizens for arbitrary reasons.

One political blogger tried to defend the bill, saying that it was the business owner’s rights as it’s a free country and the business owners are allowed to do whatever they want. The argument seemed logical, but it smelled funny. One commented pointed out that Civil Rights of the state (or nation) had precedence over someone’s opinion.

Clearly the mixing of church and state comes to mind here – what is the nature of civil rights? Some people do not think that human sexuality falls into a category that civil rights protects (and usually those people are of the religious variety). The question is whether or not sexuality is a genetic factor or choice (this question seems archaic these days, but let’s play devil’s advocate). The next question would be whether or not that matters.

The goal for many grassroots organizations is to right intolerance to the best of their ability and to promote human rights in these areas. Generally speaking, change is slow. However these days social media and the internet have seemed to increase the pace at which gay rights have spread, and how societies views as a whole are trending towards total acceptance.

The movement is akin to racial segregation in the 1950′s and 1960′s. Many people link the two together in similarity, however it must be pointed out that racial segregation was a bit more pronounced and violent. However this could be because it is impossible to hide or “pass” if you are an African American, whereas many gays can blend in in their day to day lives.

If you want to support grassroots organizations that are geared towards upholding civil rights but you don’t have the personal time to commit, then you can make a monetary donation instead. This will allow those organizations to continue their cause. We suggest finding out if any of the organizations you want to donate to have a website, and consider donating online using Paypal or another secure system. We also suggest that you do a clean sweep of your computer for any spyware software (you can get great anti-malware software tools online) so that you don’t run the risk of any of your data being stolen in the transaction.

Civil rights weren’t always a guarantee in America, and our checkered past is proof of that. We must strive towards our goal each and every day.

How Government Firearms Regulation May Impact the US Economy

Recent violent and unfortunate gun crimes have spurred the US government to start seriously considering and implementing stricter gun regulation nationwide. The range of regulation has been sweeping and often haphazard, and some of the examples of gun control regulation that have since been discussed or enacted are:

  • a ban on assault rifles
  • a ban on extended magazine clips
  • universal background checks
  • move away from right-to-carry laws
  • restrictive trigger lock laws

These measures are often enacted without considering the cost they can and will have on the US economy, and many of these measures may seem small at first. In actuality, however, a seemingly insignificant change can have a broad effect on both US economy and small businesses.

Economic Factors Involving Gun Regulation

Gun regulation can affect both short-term and long-term economic growth. A great example of a short-term effect on the economy is when regulation is proposed. Gun owners who are worried about impending regulation affecting their ability to purchase firearms may cause a surge in revenue as they buy firearms and firearm-related items before the ban (click here to get the facts on firearm-related items and sales).

Long-term effects can be a little tougher to predict. According to the NSSF, the firearms industry as a whole is a driving factor in over 210,000 jobs across America as well as over 9 million paid wages each year. It was responsible for a total of $31.84 billion generated in economic activity across the entirety of the nation, and that number’s not at all small change. Any regulation or legislation that would shrink or curtail the ability for gun stores to sell firearms and other related items would negatively impact those numbers and cause a net loss to the US economy.

Firearms sales also generate around $4.6 billion in tax revenue for federal and state governments. Regulation that decreases the amount of firearms sales and activity would also reduce this tax income for the government, and such a decrease would result in both a loss of jobs as well as a loss of tax revenue for the government. Both are undesirable in terms of long-term US economic growth.

Sensible and proper gun regulation, however, could help on both ends. Gun regulation that enables and encourages the purchase, creation, and procurement of guns while decreasing illegal sales of guns between criminals would not only keep the firearms industry alive and well but also maintain and even increase the tax revenue the government receives.

The bottom line is that gun regulation can be a double-edged sword for the US economy if created properly and sensibly. Proper regulation can increase firearms sales and ownership while also keeping law-abiding Americans safe, but reactionary gun control regulation that inhibits and hurts firearms sales and procurement will ultimately negatively impact the US economy both in the short-term and in the long-term.

Proper Nutrition in American Schools: How We Get There

Over the years, childhood obesity has become a very serious problem in the Untied States. The days of children going outside to play ball, ride bikes, and run around has been replaced with video games, the internet, and and cell phone. Children these days would rather be inside with electronics than outside getting exercise. This is part of the problem. The other part of the problem is eating habits. Most children will pick junk food over a healthy snack. Adults are lucky enough to grab supplements (some examples here) that boost health and energy to substitute for any missing nutrients where kids are not able to do so. It is the parent’s responsibility to watch what their children eat at home and it is the school’s responsibility to watch what the children are eating when they are there.

Many schools have already incorporated healthy lunches in their schools. Many schools offer chocolate milk, coffee milk, and white milk, however, it is all skim milk. Many schools have also changed their bread to whole wheat. When it comes to pasta, many schools have switched to whole wheat pasta. While the schools are trying to make their lunches healthier, there are other things that can be done.

Many high schools have a snack bar where students can purchase their lunch there rather than in the lunch line. The snacks offered in snack bars are not healthy. They include cookies, ice cream, chips, and candy. None of these choices are a healthy lunch option. Either getting rid of snack bars or offering more healthy foods like non-fat yogurt and fruit is a good way to be sure that students are eating healthy.

Many schools have vending machines throughout the school which offer soda and candy. Neither of these makes for a healthy snack. Schools should be filling their vending machines with water and fruit juice rather than soda which is high in sugar. Rather than vending machines containing candy, it can be replaced with nutritious granola bars and power bars. These treats are still sweet, however, they are much healthier.

Most school programs such as sports, drama, and band have fund raisers. Most times, these programs sell chocolate bars. While this is a good way to raise money, it is not healthy for the students purchasing the candy bars. There are other ways students can raise money. For example, 50/50 raffles are a good idea. The tickets would cost the same amount as a chocolate bar and the winner would receive half of the proceeds. It is a win-win.

Most high schools teach cooking and nutrition classes. When students are in these classes, they learn about nutrition and they learn how to cook. The teacher will give the students a recipe and the necessary ingredients and the students are required to create the dish and are graded on it. It would be a good idea for schools to teach the students to cook healthy dishes rather than foods that are high in fat and sugar. Teaching students to cook healthier can make them eat healthier as well. This art is not lost as children age and progress to high school where the right amount of protein and nutrients are 100% required, especially for people in sports. Certain hormones like testosterone (which can be supplemented by adults) can deplete with age, so it’s important to make sure a proper nutrition plan is in place as kids get older.

With obesity being the problem that it is these days, it is up to the school to do their part to help teach and instill healthy eating habits in our children.

Diminishing Social Connections

socialIt’s no surprise that the level of social interaction in the US is beginning to diminish. This is a factor of a multitude of things that have been plaguing the country for a number of years. Kids are just not as interested in socializing like they use to be.

Back in the day, the online form of entertainment was to go out and do something. People would gather for social hang outs and events. They would play sports or go camping and spend time around the fire telling stories to one another. Group activities were something of the norm and it wasn’t as common to see an individual staying at home entertaining themselves.

So what is the cause behind all of this? Many people are putting the blame on the advancement of technology. Technology has introduced new mediums of entertainment to the world. There are now plenty of things such as computers and videogames to keep childrens minds occupied. From the moment a toddler is strolled around to the moment that they grow old, they are surrounded by this new technology that entices their attention. Why spend time going out and making friends when one can do all of that online?

It’s not uncommon now for a person to spend a majority of their time in front of the internet or in front of the television. The average american watches 3-4 television shows per day. Time that may be otherwise spent with friends, is interrupted by peoples desire to not miss their favorite programs.

The growth of the internet has further added to this diminishment of social interaction. With sites like amazon and ebay, if someone wants to shop for something online like a stroller, it can be done online. Online ecommerce stores makes this easy by providing consumers with information on the best products all from one location. A good example of this would be this page which list reviews of the top strollers that are currently on the market. If someone was to otherwise shop in your typical retail stores, they would not be able to easily get honest consumer input.

While having internet and technology might seem convenient, we need to start putting more focus on some of the roots that made america the social country it use to be. Start bringing back an emphasis of sports and group activities to children in school. Start encouraging people to take part in more physical activities that will put them in front of people that share similar interests. While chatting on the internet might be entertaining, it’s much more rewarding to have actual conversations with people in person. The interaction is healthy and it will prevent people from turtling up and becoming a hermit.

Given all of this, i’m not suggesting that we abandon the technological improvements that we have gain all these years. However, I do feel that if we continue on with the current trends, then we may begin to lose one of the very natures that makes having a melting pot of cultures so great. The face to face interaction of people is simply one that cannot be substituted.

Did a cell-phone friendly website help Obama win the presidency?

Politicians of all ideologies or political parties are constantly looking to communicate their message to voters in an effort to impress upon them why they are worth to be elected leaders, especially during election times.

In ancient Rome this was accomplished by standing on a raised platform and addressing the plebeians, the “common folk” in the city’s forum. Over time and with the invention of the printing press, it came to include distributed pamphlets and newspaper coverage. Then the introduction of the radio allowed those vying for office to address entire populations at once.

In modern election campaigns, television and the Internet have become the main tools of communication for electoral candidates seeking to get their message across to voters. Those politicians who use these communications mediums to their full effect gain an advantage.

I was recently discussing politics with a friend of mine who works as a Web business strategy consultant, mainly to organizations based in the UK, and he was telling me that an excellent example of this is found when comparing the website used by now re-elected US President Barrak Obama to the one used by the unsuccessful Republican candidate Mitt Romney.

Intrigued, I asked him to explain. He showed me their websites, and pointed out that at first glance they both appear to have everything one would expect from a politician’s website, before going on to explain that the differences between the two websites become apparent when examining how they perform when viewed by people using Internet enabled cellular phones.

The two websites both use different means of achieving “mobile responsiveness”, as Web developers call it.
Obama’s website is programmed to adjust its appearance based on the screen size of the device it is being viewed with. So users of all devices get essentially the same content experience.

Romney’s website, on the other hand, is programmed to detect when viewers are using a mobile device and funnel those users to a separate website designed for mobile use. But what was wrong with the way they implemented this approach was that only a fraction of the full website’s content was included in the mobile version.

My friend explained that this is a common oversight made by developers and Web managers who address the need for mobile device responsiveness with a separate site specifically for mobile users.

The absence of certain information from Romney’s mobile website left a lot of relevant questions unanswered to potential supporters, such as “what’s Romney’s background?”, “what’s his viewpoint on issue x?”, and “what can he do for my state?”

My friend went on to say that he recently supervised a Web project for a client in the UK health and fitness industry that sells fitness courses. He says he experimented with the same two different responsive Web technologies as were used on the candidate’s websites on two different pages for separate personal training courses assessment venues, one in London and the other in Manchester.

He observed user behavior on the two pages for a month, and found that the one with the same implementation as Obama’s mobile website achieved considerably higher average traffic retention times (the time visitors stayed on the Web page for) than the page with the same implementation as Romney’s mobile website.

He says that just like with the UK organisation’s London and Manchester webpages, he believes Obama’s website would have delivered a far more satisfying user experience than Romney’s website.

It is of course impossible to know whether Romney would have won the presidency if he his website had been built better, but a politician needs every possible advantage when trying to communicate his or her philosophies and ideas to voters during an election campaign.

Given that so many people across America would have been looking at those websites in the months leading up to that historic day when the votes were taken, I wonder just how big a difference the limited user experience for mobile users on Romney’s website truly made?

Why Are Politicians Taking Up Sports?

I’ve noticed a very cool but very weird trend lately. Maybe you’ve noticed it too. I’ve noticed a bunch of politicians taking up sports. I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately. Mostly, I’ve been thinking about it because I love sports. I’ve played sports all my life, and I try to keep myself active as I get older, so I like to go hiking and stuff. I also play in a flag football league. You get the idea: I think sports are important, so it’s really cool to me to see that there seems to be a trend of politicians embracing active lifestyles in a public way.

However, of course, I’m also very interested in politics. We spend a lot of our time on this blog thinking about and discussing politics. So, after I got over my enthusiasm, my next natural question was: why? Why are so many politicians taking up sports?

There could be a lot of reasons, of course, but it’s still fun for me to speculate (that’s, like, most of what we do here, anyway; hell, that’s most of what politics is!). So, here are my ideas:

  • Some politicians are actually interested in being healthy. This is certainly a possibility. There’s definitely been a mindset shift in the United States regarding health. It didn’t used to be as cool as it is now, and a lot more people are starting to realize the immense health benefits of sports. One of those benefits, of course, is that you are much more alert and productive during the day. And, for most politicians, their days are ridiculous. Politicians pull long hours most of the time, whether you agree with them or not, and a good nutrition and exercise regimen can really help. So, I think at least a few public figures out there may have realized that it gives them an edge over their competition.
  • Kickbacks. This is a weird one, and I’ll be the first to admit that it sound more like a conspiracy than anything. But, when Rahm Emanuel is jogging down the streets of Chicago in a different pair of name-brand shoes every day, it’s hard to imagine he’s not getting something for it. I mean, he’s putting the shoes in the news. That’s something, right?
  • They are playing to the American public. Remember that mindset shift I was talking about earlier? People in the US are starting to think exercising is cool. Additionally, the public is starting to become much more worried about the state of the country’s health. On the whole, our country is sick, and we’re fat, and people are worried. This makes it very easy for a politician to appear as if he or she cares just by exercising. When you think about it, it’s a really great strategy, right? I mean, you don’t even need a platform. You just need to be able to say, “I you know what? I jog every single day, and I think it’s important.” And you’re golden.

Anyway, I’m rambling, but those are my ideas! Have you guys noticed this, too?

The Unspoken Virtue of the NRA- Helping Gun Safety

gunMost Americans are supporting strict gun control rules, but they do not like the idea of completely banning the guns because almost ninety percent of Americans believe in owning guns. In America, almost forty percent of homes have a gun. Most of them are legally owned. In America, hunting is a tradition. Even president Obama disclosed that he loves clay shooting.

Millions of Americans own guns that they use regularly for hunting, home defense and target shooting. Due to the high number of guns Americans own, the gun safety is an important issue. Policies are also an important factor to discuss, such as; the NRA is highly against the universal background checks before the purchase of guns. When Most Americans agree to it, the NRA continually denied the legislation. However, seventy-four percent of its members support universal background checks.

As about fifty-five million households in America own guns, it is very important to educate the community about the importance of safe gun management, keeping them away from children, criminals, and people who are not mentally stable. This will be a big step forward to cut the deaths and injuries caused by guns.

Politics and policies will not help educate people on gun safety. A firm initiative should be taken to educate the public on safe gun handling. For example, the NRA has ninety-three thousand certified instructors in the nation who have trained many people about gun safety. Every year this program reaches about 75000 people and it has taught about twenty-five million children about gun safety. This is the world’s biggest gun awareness program. With the help of the program, the children never touch the gun if they notice them.

Educating people is the best way in ensuring that accidental deaths from gun injuries are reduced.
According to the CDC, there was a 42.8% reduction in accidental firearm deaths. This has been because of educating people on gun safety.

The NRA supports a safety program that has played a major role in educating people on the need of keeping guns in locked places. This program helps people reduce gun injuries. The Harvard injury control research did a research and found that storing firearms in a safe place could save lives. The NRA has provided education to millions of Americans on gun safety. The training programs helped many people to learn the right things they need when dealing with the firearms. Dentists Still Wary of Economic Landscape

visit to the dentistDentistry remains to be one of the most respected professions in healthcare that was practiced as early as 7000 B.C. With that in mind, it is easy to estimate how well dentists are compensated for what they do. Typical dentists in the U.S. had a median salary of $145,240 in 2012 according to http://dentistsalaryinfo.org. While this may sound lucrative when compared to other kinds of jobs, dentists are more concerned about the economic conditions of their practices.

Generally, dentists are keeping their fingers crossed about the current economic conditions of their practices more than they were during this time last year. However, new survey results indicate that they are still light years away from being fully confident about the issue.

ADA Health Policy Resources Center (HPRC) recently unveiled its fourth quarter results that were based on the Dentists’ Economic Confidence Survey. The survey indicates dentists’ views about economic practices on a scale of 0 to 100 whereby 0 indicates full pessimism and 100 indicates full pessimism. In the results obtained, the overall score was a mere 26, and this shows that dentists are pessimistic regarding current economic conditions in their practices.

Dentists, upon being asked how confident they were in the overall economic conditions of their practices six months in the future, reported a score of 12. This is a lower score than the one that was obtained in the fourth quarter of the year 2012 in which the dentists’ confidence in their current conditions was at a value of 14 and 18 for the future.

Marko Vujicic, the managing vice president of HPRC however holds a different perspective of the situation. He believes that even though the scores represent a tiny improvement when compared to the scores fourth quarter of 2012, these values are an indication that economic conditions in current dental practices are still challenging regardless of the economic recovery.

It is also worth noting that there hasn’t been a change in the dentists’ net income since 2009 regardless of the growth of the U.S. economy. The ADA also believes that demand for dental care will keep on the low end in the future, and its recently released report entitled “A Profession in Transition” outlines the reasons why this is bound to happen.

ADA, however, is coming up with a strategic plan for 2015 called the Members First 2020. This plan which was developed by ADA’s Board of Trustees takes into consideration the research that is obtained from HPRC as well as other economic factors. Despite the dramatic shift in the dental care landscape, there is need to help young members by providing them with practical resources and instilling the importance of oral health.

It is therefore easy to conclude that even though a profession in dentistry is well-paying, many dentists still fear over the looming nature of the economic landscape. The results from the Dentists’ Economic Confidence Survey has proved that dentists are pessimistic about economic conditions of their practices.
